REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A LICENSED NEW ORLEANS TOUR GUIDE
New Orleans is one of a handful of cities in the United States, where
tour guides are regulated. While some cities have voluntary
certification programs, and some do not regulate guides at all, tour
guides in New Orleans are required, by law, to have a city issued
permit. In order to obtain a permit through the Taxi Cab Bureau, the
following are required:
1. Identification: La. state id.
Proof of residency in the Greater New Orleans area (i.e.. a utility bill
in your name that is at least six months old)
2. Test of general knowledge offered through the City, Delgado
Community College, or Friends of the Cabildo.

The City test is $10.00 and is offered on Wednesdays. Call the Bureau
at 504-658-7102, to register
3. Background check- $5.00 (Money Order or Cashier's Check Only)
Police Headquarters
715 So. Broad Street

4. Once the above is completed, the initial permit is $50.00,
renewable every year for $10.00
(Money Order or Cashier's Check Only)

Frequently
Asked Questions
What
are DMC’s and what are Tour Companies?
DMC's
are destination management companies who handle conventions and special
events. They hire tour guides
to conduct tours, escort VIPs and guests, meet incoming guests at the
airport, and for many other special functions.
Tour companies provide daily tours for visitors to our city.
Does
TGAGNOI find work for its members?
TGAGNOI
is chartered as an non-profit educational association and is thus mandated
to focus its energy on educational programs.
TGAGNOI does provide information of help to new tour guides, including
our information packet for new members, and our meetings provide a forum
for new guides to network with established guides.
TGAGNOI does not directly involve itself in finding employment for
members.
Then,
how do I establish myself in this industry?
You
can prepare a resume or description of your availability and the tours
you can perform and put this in the hands of the DMC’s and Tour Companies.
It is most helpful to visit them in person and introduce yourself,
but at least mail the information and then follow up with a phone call.
If you can, provide them with a means to contact you, including
cell phones or pager.
How
can I get more involved with TGAGNOI?
TGAGNOI
has several committees to handle activities that range from membership,
meeting agendas, the newsletter, special events and other activities.
Volunteering to serve on a committee will place you in working
contact with established members and help you to learn even more about
this industry.
